ACT

Overview

The ACT is a college placement exam that measures students' academic skills in several areas like reading, science, and mathematics. 

The exam lasts a total of 2 hours and 55 minutes is divided into four sections of English, Math, Reading, Science, and an optional essay component. 

It is scaled from 1 - 36 where students can retake the exam to obtain better scores.

English / Grammar - 36 Maximum*

75 Multiple Choice | 45 Minutes 

29-32% On Production of Writing / Topic Development and Organization

13–19% On Knowledge of Language / Conciseness and Consistency 

51-56% On Conventions of Standard English


Reading - 36 Maximum

40 Multiple Choice | 35 Minutes | 4 Passages

1 Passage on Prose Fiction

1 Passage on Social Studies / History

1 Passage on Humanities

1 Passage on Natural Sciences 


Math - 36 Maximum**

60 Multiple Choice | 60 Minutes 

7-10% on Number & Quantity / Using Integers, Rational Exponents, Vectors, and Matrices

12-15% on Algebra 

12-15% on Functions / Linear, Radical, Piecewise, Polynomial, and Logarithmic 

12-15% on Geometry

8-12% on Statistics & Probability 

40-43% on Integrating Essential Skills / Applying to Problems and Models

Science - 36 Maximum

Data Analysis | 40 Multiple Choice | 35 Minutes 

40-50% on Interpretation of Data

20-30% on Scientific Investigation

25-35% on Evaluation of Models, Inferences, and Experimental Results

Essay (Optional) - 8 Maximum

1 Prompt | 40 Minutes 

1 General Issue or Topic That One Has to Use 3 Perspectives Listed in the Prompt  To Create an Argument 


* The Composite Score is the Average of the First Four Sections (1 - 36; 20 is the 50th Percentile)


** In the Math Section, Most Four-Function and Scientific Calculators Are Permitted
